"Kids don't come with an instruction manual" ............ I've heard this many times and I've always just nodded in agreement at the person saying it. I knew it was true....but until I had my own child I didn't realize HOW true it really was. AND HOW FRUSTRATING IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trial & Error is my LEAST favorite part of being a Mom, and the only reason I hate it so much is because my daughter is the one who suffers until I figure it out. (Thank God for giving me wisdom & discernment so many times when I just had no idea what to do!) I can talk to her pediatrician until i'm blue in the face, I can google every question I have, but ultimately, you never know whats gonna work until you try it. There are HUNDREDS of different brands all selling the exact same baby product...as a mommy, it's your job to figure out what product would be best for your little one.
I was the pregnant girl who did extensive research on EVERYTHING (and i mean everything) placed on my registry. Anything I got for Miah was researched first. The biggest struggle for me has been with formula. Miah has a very sensitive little tummy (as were finding out) She has acid reflux which she's on zantac for, and she doesn't tolerate milk based formula. She was put on soy (which I wasn't happy about at all) but the doctor said with a milk allergy, she had to have it. So...she was on it...and she suffered daily with painful gas, constipation, and eventually vomitting. I couldn't take seeing my baby in agony anymore so I called the doctor and told him she is not doing well on the soy at all. When I described it to him he said Miah sounded colicky, and like she can't tolerate the soy either.
Now the term colic, I always thought meant that the baby just cried for no reason for hours on end causing the parents to pull out their hair and run for the hills. Well, Miah was crying for hours on end, but it wasn't for no reason. The poor girl had a horrible time with gas, and was completely inconsolable and was visibly in pain. How can I want to pull out MY hair and be frustrated when my babys the one in pain from a terrible stomach ache?? I looked up colic, and found that it is related to stomach issues in babys that cause them a lot of pain. Does she have colic? I dont know and I dont care. All I know is that she was miserable, and having a very hard time with her stomach!
So...the doctor suggested we try Nutramigen. (HOLY EXPENSIVE BATMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!) But I noticed a difference after the first feeding. Normally after a feeding she would scream, and draw her legs up to her stomach and I'd burp her and she'd spit up/throw up and then keep screaming and do it again until she was eventually so tired she fell asleep in my arms, and then she'd wake up out of a dead sleep screaming and she'd start passing gas. I HATED SEEING MY BABY LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!!!! There were times I just cried with her because I felt SO bad for her!!!! But, after the nutramigen, she didn't scream. She burped normally, she didn't spit up or throw up at all, and she didnt wake up crying in pain. it was so wonderful to see her peaceful and not in pain. I'm hoping the nutramigen just keeps getting better and better and helps her sensitive tummy. I'll gladly shell out the money for it....you can't put a price on a happy & pain free baby :)
