When Miah was in my belly, Mike and I always joked that she'd be a "sleeper" because our little "family" (Mike, Myself and the kitties) just loves to sleep and take naps. When Miah was 1 day old, she slept almost 6 hours straight through the night. The nurses came in and brought her to me (I had a c-section so I didn't keep her in my room) said "She's still sleeping...but you should wake her to nurse, she's just not waking up by herself to eat, you've got yourself a sleeper!" ...
The first two months of her life (night 1 of her life aside) she was a typical newborn with typical newborn sleep habits. Up every 2-3 hours for diaper change & feed. The only thing was, she had her night and day confused, and would sleep more during the day than at night. Of course, I slept when she slept (best advice I got!!) so that helped a lot. I had just anticipated being up all night with her, and I normally was!
We got "the miracle blanket" which was supposed to help her sleep more soundly. It definitely worked, and she slept 6 hours straight one night with that. It definitely helped us to get her "day and night" problem fixed.
When she was 8 weeks old (july 30th to be exact hahaha) she slept 9 hours through the night. I couldn't believe it!!!!!! The next two nights SUCKED though. She hardly slept at all. On August 5th she slept for 9 hours straight again. Needless to say, I was scared that even though I got one good 9 hour night, i was going to get two nights to terror that followed....but i didn't. She slept another 9 hours the next night. Since then (it's august 15th now, so for the past 10 days...) she's slept 9 hours straight everynight but maybe two. WHOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Her typical is 10-7 but if she gets tired earlier, I put her down earlier. She's doing excellent with this.
but theres one catch.................
The 9 hour stretch is while she's in her swing. She sleeps great in that. But Mike and I couldn't help but think "have we created a monster???" Obviously she can't sleep in her swing for the rest of her life. So we've started to "wean" her from the swing, while she's still young enough to learn to self soothe and while she's not dependent on the swing. We started putting the swing on a lower setting, and shes doing great with that. Next step is to turn the swing off after she falls asleep. Then after that, just place her in her bassinet for bedtime instead of the swing. Of course, after we wean her from the swing, later on we'll have to wean her from the bassinet and into a crib, lol the weaning never ends.
What I forgot to mention is, after Miah sleeps 9 hours, she wakes up, gets a diaper, gets a bottle, and falls back asleep on me. So I lay her back down and she sleeps another 3-4 hours. Then she wakes up and is usually up between 1-3 hours and naps again.Yes. Our child is a beast when it comes to sleeping. lol. At first I was worried...she sleeps sooo much but she's alert and happy when she's awake. I did tons of research online because I wasn't sure of normal sleep habits for a two month old, but TONNNNS of people have "sleepers" too, who follow a similar schedule as Miah's.
So, next step.......weaning from the swing. I'll let you know how it goes.....but i'm hoping to report that i'll still have "a sleeper" :)
